Since its inception in the 1980s, Chinese rock and roll has emerged from the underground and found an increasingly dedicated audience within the mainstream. As a byproduct of the postsocialist landscape that currently frames contemporary Chinese society, rock and roll has been appropriated by many Chinese as a means whereby they can dismantle geocultural barriers and strike a balance between Chinese identity and globalized culture. My research reevaluates the history of rock and roll as a sociocultural phenomenon with regards to its relevance within the discussion of postsocialist Chinese cultural politics.
