Skills from Conn to career
At Connecticut College, our pre-health professions students gain the ability to identify, polish and translate their skills to shadowing, internships, job searches and professional school applications:
- Research and quantitative skills
- Professionalism and ethical behavior
- Cultural competence
- Resilience and adaptability
- Leadership and service experiences
Career Informed Learning
Alumni and parents bring real-world problems to the classroom; students research, analyze and offer solutions.
Example: In Anthropology of Sexuality, a public health designated course, students were mentored by an alum who is the head of strategic projects for an international health concern.
Connections curriculum
Pre-Health students complete a major in their field of interest. To fulfill College requirements, they may also select from a number of innovative Integrative Pathways including Public Health; Social Justice and Sustainability; Power/Knowledge; and Global Capitalism. Other students may pursue a certificate from the Toor-Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts; the Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy, the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology or the Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment. Pathways and centers offer an integrative approach to complete non-science prerequisites and community service, essential pieces to a strong professional school application.
Volunteer and Clinical Experiences
Students develop competencies through engagement on and off campus:
- Connecticut College Pre-Health Club. Students with interests in medicine, including veterinary, dental, physician's assistant, nursing, physical therapy and occupational therapy, come together to learn about shadowing and volunteer activities, graduate programs, standardized test preparation and interview skills.
- CC-EMS sponsors an EMT certification course, local shadowing and provides service to club athletics on campus.
- Pre-Health Paramedic Internship Program. Case studies from emergency room doctors, hospital and ER shadowing.
- The Fast Forward five-day career-intensive program
- Shadowing experiences at local hospitals
