Art history majors have an opportunity to take courses that deal with the artistic production of Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. You will study a variety of media — painting, sculpture, architecture, and even film — from antiquity to the present. Many courses focus on the art of a particular place and time, while others follow a theme through different cultural moments.
Whatever the topic, our courses often include the opportunity to study original works of art. The College's art holdings are rich and include:
- Chu-Griffis Asian Art Collection
- Old Master prints, Japanese woodcuts, American prints, and 19th-century photography housed in the Wetmore Print Collection
- a teaching collection of African art
- on-campus works by prominent 20th-century sculptors (among them, Louise Nevelson, Tony Rosenthal and Sol Le Witt)
- The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, a museum with strengths in American and European art, within easy walking distance of Cummings Arts Center
