Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Connecticut College. We are committed to providing high-quality instruction in the fields of mathematics, statistics, and data science, empowering our students to become proficient with a wide variety of problem-solving techniques and ways of understanding the world around us. We are located in Fanning Hall.
Connecticut College offers small classes, personal attention, and opportunities for individual exploration of topics in mathematics and statistics. Students have the opportunity to engage with both theoretical and applied perspectives, from theoretical courses such as analysis, algebra, machine learning, probability, and mathematical statistics to applied courses such as differential equations, regression techniques, time series, and biostatistics.
Small classes, accessible professors, one-on-one collaborations, and social activities help foster a spirit of community and shared endeavor. Students serve as peer tutors in help centers in mathematics and statistics that support students in calculus, introductory statistics and other 200-level courses offered by the department. Members of the department’s Student Advisory Board (SAB) organize game nights and other social events, provide advice to other students during preregistration, and design an annual departmental T-shirt. Students with outstanding records in mathematics and statistics courses are selected for membership in Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society.
The department offers majors and minors in both Mathematics and in Statistics and Data Science.
