Specializations

History of Western political philosophy from Plato to the present

W. John Coats Jr. was the recipient of the College's 2003 Nancy Batson Nisbet Rash Faculty Research Award for excellence in academic research.

He delivered a talk "The Liberal Arts Academy: A Minority Report."

Professor Coats is the author of The Activity of Politics (1989), A Theory of Republican Character (1994), Statesmanship (1995), Oakeshott and His Contemporaries (2000), Political Theory and Practice (2003), Montaigne’s Essais (2004), Armed Force and Moderate Political Life (2008), Michael Oakeshott as a Philosopher of the Creative (2019), and co-author of The Poetic Character of Human Activity (2012), as well as author of over 30 articles, book chapters, and review essays.

He has received research grants from the Earhart Foundation, NEH, the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Institute for Educational Affairs.
