2016 graduate awarded Connecticut College's 6th Fulbright this year
Bianca Lopez, a 2016 Connecticut College graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to South Korea. Lopez’s recent award brings the number of Fulbright awards at Connecticut College this year to six.
Fulbright fellows receive round-trip travel to their host countries, a living stipend, project allowances and medical insurance. Connecticut College is consistently recognized as a top producer of Fulbright fellows, with 39 winners in the last six years.
Lopez will teach English to school-aged children while living in a homestay. Prior to beginning her teaching assignment, she will complete six weeks of intensive Korean language classes.
At Connecticut College, Lopez double majored in psychology and human development and was a scholar in the College’s Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy. After graduation, she spent four months teaching in Iquique, Chile, and then worked as community screenings assistant at The Future Project.
Lopez credits her advisers, professors Audrey Zakriski and Michelle Dunlap, with giving her the skills and the confidence to pursue the Fulbright fellowship.
“They continuously affirmed my ability while encouraging me to challenge myself. Their guidance through my undergraduate career has provided me with the tools to remain resilient in foreign or otherwise difficult situations,” she said.
Following her Fulbright year, Lopez hopes to work for a nonprofit that expands opportunities for children from vulnerable populations.
In June, the College announced this year’s five other Fulbright winners: Peter Burdge ’17, Susanna Dolan ’17, Max Nichols ’14, Benji Osajie ’17 and Rocio Tinoco ’17. Read their stories.
